My 85 Jetta TD has avoided getting towed since I got it back about 1988,
except once when it slid off an icy road and bent a subframe......which got
replaced with a good used one. The car has been incredible...far beyond my
wildest expectations. And I personally think it has some advantages over
the newer TDI versions....one of the things I like about diesels is the
simplicity and reliability, and the TDI's are moving toward an ultra high
tech target.....IMHO.
My 84 Rabbit na D has pretty much the same reputation. Towed once when it
hit a rock hidden by a snowbank. Still serving daily......greatly benefited
last year from getting new glow plugs and polished up glow plug connections.
