Using both interchangeably is correct, it would seem.  Hazarding a guess
would say that snaprings come off with snapring pliers... the ones that have
little round ends, and circlips have no facility for a plier to attach other
than a flat spot for the flat jawed pliers to slip off of repeatedly and mar
the bearing journal on your type one high performance billet stroked
counterweighted crankshaft.
It is correct to refer to them as internal and external ____  depending if
the groove is external to the shaft, or internal in a bore. An internal
circlip has to be one of the most vexing beasties...  Anyone with a copy of
Machinery's Handbook handy?  Mine is on a dead hard drive...

Hood- in N america the motor hides under it.

Bonnet-over the pond. found on british cars, probably called a bonnet
because it resembles an article of clothing that the front points up when
installed, much like the hood a british car, usually open...  Distributor on
an MG should have been called "socks" it was off and on so much...  Another
parallel is the front cover some use on their cars called a bra.  Gets rusty
if you never remove it...

In Canada, the Governor General goes to all the bars in a foreign country
using our jet with an entourage along, and the taxpayer picks up the tab.
That's monarchy Canadian style.
