I have a hard time expressing how much I enjoyed the last two threads
(Shalyn and Val's)
To master a new language in writing is very difficult , spoken I got down to
an acceptable standard (in a pub) the Judges around here (B.C.Supreme)
are having a hard time with my direct way of calling a spade a spade.
Myself, I'm a pretty good microbiologist, cook, fencer, and literati.
Not sure where that intersects mechanicking, but hey. (shalyn)
It all meshes in ----- every little bit. And usually good tinkerers are good at many
different disciplines.
I have most of the basics down pretty well --- like Electricity --Electronics --Machining
--welding -- and more. That is why this place is so helpful , it is a fantastic source of
specifics. The very first question I asked here was "can I use a 1.5L pump on a 1.6L?",
within 20 minutes I had a PM from Gary Orlando -- Answer? YES.
1 hour later I was driving better than ever. A new pump from stealership Capilano Volks
5000 dollars Canadian. -- The 1.5L pump was sitting on the workbench , is was a low
mileage ---PO put too big a battery in Rabbit and it caught fire.
Over time I got a pile of moneysaving specifics from Loren ,James Hansen , Sandy Cameron
Roger Brown, Scott Kair, and many more. ---- Val Christian is my favorite sparring partner
due to the many loves we have in common. I feel in my guts that many threads in this place
shows a reflection of love of aviating , ham radio and in no small part GENSETS.
As a stand-by stand alone Genset the 1.5L-1.6L VW diesel is hard to beat. It runs like
a top at 3600 Rpm ----- there are times I wish I did not have a lister set 50KVA .
. Fortunately, I ran into
a guy who wanted to teach, and had "retired" from a career as a service
manager at a Volvo dealership. His love was indoor motorcycle racing
and rally cars. And I suppose teaching.(Val)
I agree that the kind patient elderly that took time to explain to me (I am a bit slow)
when I was a young whippersnapper --probably outweigh everything else.
On the Literati front I do have one very strong card ---- Technical (high) translator..
That opens some insight to why the German version is so important for double checking.
The people who REALLY know the little beauties ,are seldom the translators in Europe.
Having worked for and with at least 3 Geniuses did not harm either.----sometimes made
me feel like a retard.----Good to learn a bit of humility at times.
One mystery to me is how a BLIND person can be a super mechanic or Radio Ham. ?
--they can indeed.
So to wrap it up , all these things becomes intertwined and like Ulysses' we are a part of all
we met and done.
For those of you who are Really interested let me recommend to your wife that she
gives you a book by Bosch "Disel-Engine management" second edition. ISBN 0-7680-0509-4.
As a wedding day gift --(they allways remember that day for some reason)
Warning : it is not a pump specific overhaul book. And it is hard slugging.
Hagar.
PS: Why we are literary --my wish is that the member who bought a VW from a
woman and got chased by the police for driving a stolen car --would tell that story
one more time. ---I think it got removed from archives.
