[Vwdiesel] odd sighting

They're getting fairly scarce, but aren't as rare as a factory Rabbit
td, or a Quantum turbo coupe. My old 84 Jetta was originally a td (trunk
badge identifies them), but the original owner had ignored the temp needle
burying itself on the right side, as well as steam blowing out from under
the hood. He gave the car to a buddy of mine, who transplanted an na in it.
He kept the original tranny- an FF or FN- and I'd like to have seen what it
would have been like with the original engine. >Drool!<
There's another one I've seen around town about twice and never can
catch. It's got pristine silver metallic paint, GTI rims, & factory
sunroof. Last time I saw it, we were going in opposite directions and I
almost went over the curb rubbernecking, trying to figure out how to reverse
direction and catch him. He was blasting along in the passing lane, though,
so it would have been pretty hopeless.
Awhile back the local trader paper ran an ad for an '84 A1 Jetta GLI,
cheap. Those are very rare, with a GTI-style suspension and, allegedly,
factory 4-wheel disc brakes. Hallucinations of a td transplant festered in
my head. Phone call revealed that it had collided with something much less
resilient at speed.
A2 Jettas are much roomier and more comfortable, but if I ever see that
silver A1 td with a for sale sign in the window, I will be having a serious
chat with the owner, even if it means sleeping in the garage for awhile.
