Sometimes the cam breaks, usually the lifters and
valves get trashed, and often the head needs to be replaced

  Is that the case with the TDI vs. IDI?  I know I've seen a lot of collided 
heads on the IDI 1.6 and 1.5 and never damaged a head.  The only one 
that did was from a valve head the broke off.  Timing was fine on that one, 
just a broken valve.  The best case was one or two bent valves.  Worst 
two were 7 bent valves and 7 or 8 bent with a broken cam.  Most of the 
time the lifters from the bent valves are trashed.
