Welcome!
A TD engine in a Golf does make a fun ride.
There are some things you may want to check before seriously putting
mileage on the car. Namely:
A fresh timing belt. That is, if the previous history is unknown. A
broken belt = broken valves and/or holed pistons.
Check the cam timing and injection timing. Check valve lash.
Check all glow plugs are functioning. I suppose in the Netherlands it
can get pretty cold. And yes, that lever is a cold start device. It
advances the pump timing a few degrees to aid cold starting.
Door handles are an easy swap. The tumblers can be removed and re-keyed
so all match. You can even swap with the passenger door handle as a
short term fix and just leave the pass. door lock disconnected for the
time being.
You can find pretty much everything you would want to know by searching
the archives.
There are some other good sites as well...

Granted, it mostly TDI engines cars, but there is a goodly amount of IDI
stuff there as well, and a lot of info still applies.
