  Before you shoot yourself, play with the timing, change the fueling or 
anything else (and DON'T use any Bon Ami) go back there and give it 
the sniff test.  Yeah, Hagar has his hillbilly tuning, I say you can tell 
an awful lot by sniffing.
  A fresh, new diesel, when warm, the exhaust will almost smell like 
propane exhaust or have a sweet, sharp, possibly slightly dusty 
smelling exhaust.  If it smells strongly of fuel then you probably 
need injectors.  If it smells like it's burning oil then you're burning 
oil.  If it's oil then don't mess with your timing or fueling.  If it's fuel 
then 
no need to worry about about oil usage since a quart/couple hundred 
miles isn't abnormal for new rings.
