Before you shoot yourself, play with the timing, change the fueling or
anything else (and DON'T use any Bon Ami) go back there and give it
the sniff test. Yeah, Hagar has his hillbilly tuning, I say you can tell
an awful lot by sniffing.
A fresh, new diesel, when warm, the exhaust will almost smell like
propane exhaust or have a sweet, sharp, possibly slightly dusty
smelling exhaust. If it smells strongly of fuel then you probably
need injectors. If it smells like it's burning oil then you're burning
oil. If it's oil then don't mess with your timing or fueling. If it's fuel
then
no need to worry about about oil usage since a quart/couple hundred
miles isn't abnormal for new rings.
