I think your bottom end isn't at issue here. But you need to pull the
head to get to the bottom of this mystery.

I second the motion.
Specifically check the exhaust side valves, if it was an intake side leak
the oil would be burned.

That, and I keep getting hung up on the phrase "the previous owner said".
Unless the previous owner was someone like Smoky Yunick, you just never
know.
My Dad picked up a 68 weekender type 2 van a whole bunch of years ago. Motor
was rebuilt.  I drove it, it drove like it was, and looked right.  Dad
bought the van, and picked it up the next morning as the guy wanted to move
some stuff out to his relative's farm before the van was gone.  The prick
swapped the motor out overnight, and the leaker that was in there the next
day was in no way the motor I looked at, and it popped on Dad a few weeks
later.  You just never know what lengths a PO will go to...
