Mark,
I don't think it can be done that way.
You can (maybe) compress the springs in place, but I don't think you can
get the top spring plate off while it is still up in the shock pocket.
It's a big piece and there won't be a whole lot of room to maneuver.
It is not very difficult or time consuming to remove the strut assy.
Leave the tranny side of the axle connected. Just disconnect and suspend
the brake caliper, remove the top retainer, tie rod, balljoint, and axle
nut and pull the hub out and away from the axle stub. The strut assy
will just drop out.
