AFAIK one of the differences between the diesel vanagon and r/j/s is that the
r/j/s runs coolant full bore through the heater core and the heating is
controlled by whether or not the air flaps and fan are on. The vanagon on
the
other hand closes and opens a valve to the core.
My '85 is the first VW and most Audi that I'd seen that DIDN'T have a
valve on the heater circuit. It runs full through. The Quattro, Rabbits,
not sure about the 5000, all have valves on the heater circuit to regulate
temp. Makes for a lag factor but keeps the cabin cooler in hot weather
where you have a hot heater core in there on the flap style.
