Hey Gang,
Thanks for all of the advice.  The problem turned out to be a bent right front rim.  This was supposedly checked by the local Firestone dealer, but his analysis was obviously flawed.  Purchased a good used set of standard 14" Jetta steel wheels and ebay which solved that problem.
 
Question:  Is the driver's side motor mount insert on a five speed setup the same as the passenger's side?
 
Over the last several weeks, the 1.6 engine has required the starter to turn over several more times than previously with the engine hot or cold.  It seems to help if the cold start lever is pulled out in either case.  I do not suspect the glow plugs as this condition occurs with the engine hot also.  Could anyone suggest any possible causes, please.
