Mike,
An over-filled crankcase can cause runaway. If you are 1L over now, I
wonder what it was when you had your runaway problem?

The crank balance weights hit the oil causing foaming, which expands and
oozes everywhere, pushed up through the CCV into the intake. Bingo!

Correct oil level, with a better CCV, and a splash shield under the
valve cover should take care of the runaway issue. This splash shield
can be found in a scrap yard in most 8v gassers.
