[Vwdiesel] Project Bondo Golfy-fuel mileage 1.6L NA Golf??

hmmm.
Our Passat routinely gets 52/63mpg  (US/Imperial) with my wife driving it,
and my Golf gets barely 38/45mpg .  Passat is 1Z tdi, and golf is 1.9td,
both 1997.  wish the golf was a tdi too.  doing a 4 hour trip in the Passat
at an average speed of 155kph still gets 45/53mpg. That's quite likeable.
My 1.6td Jetta (89) would vary quite a bit as the heat was turned up quite a
bit.  If I managed to keep my foot out of it, I could get 40/48, but that
was on a pretty sedate trip.  Driving style had a lot to do with it in the
td 1.6 it seemed to me, more so than with the others.  On my 1.6na, you
could hold the pedal to the floor all day and still get 50 imp out of it.
That was at a breakneck speed of 120kph, 125 on descent. It was impossible
to use more and not leave a huge soot cloud behind...  One thing I do know,
the golf needs some lookin at when I get time.  That's too poor even for my
lead foot.

My last tank in the Rabbit was 50.5MPG!!!  That thing never ceases to
amaze me.

The TDI gets between 42-45 normally and 46-48 on the highway.
