[Vwdiesel] need help to make starter work 81 jetta diesel

Hi,

I have only posted a few times...  I've been working on a turbo diesel project and I am mostly done but I can't find the right wires to make the starter work.  What I would really like to do is set-up a starter button inside the car...

so I can turn the key to the on position and then use the button to activate the starter.  Not for any particular reason other than I just want to do it that way..

Everything else seems to work off the key even the glow plugs but the starter won't do anything.  I even tried jumping across the terminals on the starter but got nothing but a few little sparks..   

I don't know if I am just missing a ground or waht but any help would be great...
