[Vwdiesel] Injection Pump

I'm just curious as to what the long screw with a spring on it connected to
the back of the injection pump is for. It is by the cold start lever.  

 

Also  would it be ok to post a picture or two of my pump on here to have
some one point out exactly what screws I need to mess with to try and get my
smoke down. I just want to make sure it is ok to attach a picture or two. It
seems that since I have a 91 ECO my pump is a little different then the
rest.
