In my early Rabbit days, I had three VW diesels (77, 78 and 79) before
I bought a used one. It was a 79 from a friend of a friend. Kind of
a Heath Kit car. John had disassembled it in Bruce's garage. At the
time Bruce and I lived two houses apart. This was a deal among ham radio
people, and I got the car for a fair price, we pushed it to my garage,
and I put it together. Never had to install any antennas, though. It
came with more mounts on the roof than I could ever use.
One thing that was right on this car is that it had two rear window
defogger switches. The second one had the 8mm nut from a glow plug
imbedded into the switch. If you wanted to start the car in the winter,
you just looked at the clock, and picked your glow time. Kept the car
from getting stolen. The switch ran the relay for the glow plugs.
The GP relays get water into them, corosion and water rattling around
then seem to cause erratic actuation of the relay. I've cleaned them
out, cleaned contacts, resoldered the boards, and replaced components.
The case prys off carefully with two small slotted screwdrivers.
