[Vwdiesel] Rabbit droppings # 122 --- ( about this great site )

To me this place has become a lot more than "torque dis or torque dat" it has become
a part of my life that I never ever dreamed could evolve to a place where friends
are made and jokes are told. ----All the links you people post are great for a geezer
in sickbay ---- and probably for some of the young whippersnappers as well.

I stumbled in here (serendipity?) at a time when I had a sick Rabbit and NO cash. (IRS)

I can't say enough about the help I got from here ---except -- WOW. All my troubles are gone
even my Tow Truck nightmares ( $ 60 C a pop).

Now for the pay back --- I just happen to have a LOT of hands on experience
with Gensets. And considering the situation for the coming winter up in the Great White north.

53 dollars us a barrel and the latest increase in natural gas price. To reclaim some
heat from a VW Genset makes sense. Yes I am talking about both from coolant and from exhaust as was mentioned. Simple and practical to do.

Last year I ran a test engine in front of here on a piece of plywood and using a 20 liter bucket for cooling . I got a good handle on how much heat is available
for reclaiming. It was a 1.5 L NA with no load attached. That same unit with a 10 KVA
generator would heat this place on a cold day --no problemo. (Small two story).

If you do not need a standby Genset --forget it--- use that fryer fat in an Oilfurnace.

Nothing IMHO is better than a Diesel Rabbit ----- for running about town ---and
no engine is better IMHO for a personal stand-by Genset than an old 1.5 or 1.6 VW diesel.
Go to Roger Browns page and look up SAE paper. There you can find the
power curves for a VW. ---Warning : these little devils are high speed diesels
so use lots of RPM. I would bolt at least two flywheels on a set , helps in starting big electric motors. Why the warning ? it is very easy to put too much torque on a genset.

For all those people in Florida and that area ? ---- a nice little genset ? EH ? what is holding
you back ?. Val Christian kind of sunk my barges -----and he is partly right I have to re
think.
Heat and Electricity at the same time ? that makes it a very appealing
solution in a LOT of places.
Can you imagine taking that NEW solid oak dining table and putting
it in the stove to keep warm ? --- I do NOT have to imagine ---I was there in Denmark
1941 --1942 when the Siberian express rolled in. Those old tenements were NOT insulated
properly. You guys should see heating in Denmark NOW --WOW. ---they learned.
But for one thing . IF the gas stops ---they have NO backup. Funny thing that gas comes from Siberia.

Is peat a good fuel ? ----sure was then ---- looked like bricks . ------ I was involved in
production of those bricks as a kid.

Gentlemen start your Gensets.

Hagar.

PS : I just have to mention the "Volks Stove". ---- Hitler proudly announced this stove
of all stoves. ----And he was right --I got hold of a bunch ---and that was how we got
heat in December 1945 to summer 1946. Incredible design.
