[Vwdiesel] re-ring done, but no start

Finally got time to finish putting my '86 na back together over the weekend
after re-ringing . Everything went pretty well until I actually got it all
installed and tried to start it. It did not sound good. Turns out the cam
pulley that I had so much trouble getting off slipped which I know is not
good. I thought I had it plenty tight but apparently not. I tightened it
to where I was concerned the cam slot would break. I had already replaced
the cam because the p.o. had broken the original cam doing the same thing.
All timing was of course off. I reset everything I think correctly. The
belt is a blister to get on. It sounds ok now cranking but will not begin
to run. Is it possible I have hurt the valves that quickly? It is a
hydraulic engine and I can't see where the lifters could have been pumped
up in that short of a time but I don't know. I'm hoping I have just missed
something or that it is still not timed correctly. Ran out of time last
night and not much tonight but may do a compression check, I guess that
will tell. Can't figure why the heck there is a key slot in the cam but
they use no keyway. That would prevent all this.
