[Vwdiesel] TDI - Failing fuel pump }:o(

I went ahead and carried my TDI to my local dealership to let them adjust
the timing as well as find out why my airbag light was on. I told them about
the trouble I have during cold starting and the white smoke. I also told
them I knew the timing was retarded. I didn't mention anything about the
loud knocking coming from the fuel pump/#1 injector area.
The technician said he couldn't get the "dynamic timing" set and the pump
was making noise. So he believes the pump is failing. $1300 for a factory
rebuilt pump and $400 labor ($75 an hour).

I found a rebuilt pump at Impex for $833.60 plus a $300 core fee ($1133.60
total).

Anybody know of any other sources? Also, what are everyone's opinions on
having my pump rebuilt by an outside shop? Could it be done? Would it be
cheaper?

Thanks.
