If the pump is failing the timing will slowly get off more and more. Also,
if the timing belt stretches, or the tensioner wears out, there will be
slack in the belt causing the timing to be off.
The newest version of VAG-COM (v 409) gives you a nice graph that shows you
where your timing is and where it should be.
