Hi Hagar & Everyone,

Good to be back on the ol' list. (w/o a diesel mind you, sniff sniff)
Yeah, I tried to save the ol' Jetta...even had a list member in Ontario
mildly interested in it.
Turned out the poor thing needed a lot of work to pass a safety inspection
though.
Trunk floor, strut tops (on 3 corners), rear floor under the seat, door
skin, 4 struts, 2 brakes, etc. etc. and the list goes on. Basically, it was
rotted, though it appeared a very nice car.

It ran like a TOP ! I sold it back to my bro-in-law who ripped 3 doors off
it and the engine/tranny went into his sons' gasser. It has over 400k on it
and still gets 49-50mpg .........sigh. He also installed a $1000 ESPAR
heater in it, to start it every 4 hours and keep it warm in those cccold
JAN/FEB NB days. When his sone gets off work, car is already toasty. No
glow plugs even needed most times. mmmmmmmm

I know of a very nice 92 Diesel Jetta in Ontario for $500, but owner says
the engine is beat.
Has 100PSI compression on 3 cylinders and 4th not much better. Nearly
impossible to start.
He says mechanic told him rigns for sure and he thought the cylinder bores
would be worn "oval". I don't understand that statement, but that's what's
being passed onto me.

If I thought I could get it back to NB for cheap, and fix it for cheap, I'd
buy it, but thats a long ways away (Mississauga,ONT to NB is 1000 miles or
so). Shame.....guy is just going to part it out. There's an 84 Diesel
Jetta for sale locally for $250 but I think that's an A1 and engine wouldn't
fit a 92...right? "As is" condition, which usually means rotted out. I
bought a MIG welder, but have yet to use it.

Sometimes being away from the main body of where everything is happening
(ONT or BC) really sucks when it comes to finding cheap cars locally.

Guy down the road here has prolly 7 or 8 VW's....Roccos, Golfs, Busses,
Jetta or 2 etc., but he's not selling anything.

Well, all for now. If anyone hears of a diesel in NB/NS, keep me in mind.
I'm on a shoestring budget.

Mike :-)

Mike and All : IMHO the Rabbits and Jettas are well worth putting some
money
in to now. Rust repair panels are made in Denmark and the rest ? ---It
is
close to becoming a GOOD investment. ------ Mike 300 dollars Canadian
? ----
you gave it away.

How much to invest in a Rabbit ? 15 000 US dollars would be my answer.
That would get you a top of the line "Creampuff" ------that will drive
circles around a Prius.
for 22 000 dollars. A new Golf diesel here is about 30 000 dollars
Canadian.

Love those OLD Rabbits ----yes siree.

I have said it many times --- IMHO The diesel Rabbits are the finest all
around
piece of transportation ever made by man.(for a DIY) A four door Rabbit
will get 4 big people
to the Opera in style. All you have to do is go around and make sure those
long
gowns are not dragging in the slush.

I like the looks of the little beauties--- and I have a Royal Brougham Olds
V8 sitting here.
Yeah a diesel too--- well sort of.

Hagar.

PS : Beetle GOLD medal Rabbit Silver.
