[Vwdiesel] Intermittent wiper failure

We have an 1998 A3 Jetta TDI with 296 000 km on it.

>From the beginning it has had problems with the intermittent wiper.  The
symptoms were that when switching to intermittent, sometimes the wiper
blade would do half a stroke and then stop completely.  Under warranty
(quite a long time ago now) the wiper motor was replaced as was the relay,
I believe.  Now the intermittent setting has given up the ghost entirely,
with the wiper not moving at all when this setting is selected.  However,
both regular and fast speeds work fine when selected.

Any guidance as to what may be the problem, would be greatly appreciated.
