I've not heard of a 1.4 diesel, although it wouldn't surprise me. My first car, a '73 Fox, 
had a 1.5 gas with basically the same block & head design, so I suspect the gas 
predates the diesel. My other early Audi, a '73 100GL, had a 1.9L of quite different 
design, not sure of the heritage of this one. That engine was very strong and 
absolutely bulletproof, all the way to the junkyard... the inboard front brakes were the 
death of the car - when they failed, the car was not worth saving :-(
Inboard brakes - great in theory, but really *lousy* in practice - this is the only time 
I've had near total brake failure on a car - luckily the parking brake still worked.
