It was a false errand used to confuse new recruits or
'school leavers'. It was because the drive for the vaccuum
is a flat slot/key that was left over from when it was used
for a gasser's distributor which would  give spark at no4
cylinder rather than no1 when no 1 was at TDC
compression.... Of course it doesnt matter when the drive is
only a vaccuum pump...
