Just throwing this out there...
Have you verified the operation of your temp gauge with a another?
My Rabbit PU didn't come with a temp gauge(just and idiot light). I just
installed a mechanical temp gauge. A Sunpro from Advanced Auto
Parts(Kragen everywhere else). It was a pain to plumb in, but well worth
the effort.
