Here's one remarkable item on my recently running '83 diesel vanagon. When I
got it I couldn't help noticing the two heavy gauge wires running (pinched by
the engine lid) from the engine, along the passenger compartment floor up to
the push-button momentary switch mounted next to the steering column. The
individual doing that repair damage cut bare the starter lead and didn't retape
it, decided against that idea ad opted to go directly to the battery post,
then cut the glow plug lead just after the nut at the bus bar and wired the
return in with a twist and a small bit of elec. tape. No FUSE ANYWHERE with 10
gauge pinched and chaffed wire all through the van where it would get walked
on!!!! The place where the engine lid piched it was very close to being worn
through. I guess he thought that doing all that was easier than unplugging and
replacing the slightly melted, easily accessible glow plug relay at 2 min. of
labor and $25 in parts for a new one shipped to the door????? It's a shame the
engine got a tossed rod, but the melted battery or worse wasn't very far away.
