as far as the germans being smart and wonderful
engineers? i generally agree and for the most part am
a devout fan. but they do get a few things wrong. i am
still in awe of the robust design of their cv joints
in comparison with the wimpy american ones i see.
smallest part being a 3/4 inch ball bearing compared
to a tiny little needle bearing.

the vanagon radiator is the same way - the tubes go
side to side with both in and out on the passenger
side of vehicle. doesn't change much in my mind as far
as drawing from top or bottom or where the air (if
there ever is any) in the system will end up.

screw type pumps? are you talking about the impeller
with the slightly curved blades?

only thing i disagree with you here is about the
removing pump and inspect. if you remove the pump i
would suggest you just replace it rather than inspect.
(of course inspecting it is a good thing to do for
troubleshooting purposes.) for the small cost of these
pumps i wouldn't take a chance on it.
