I have telescoping gauges so I measured #2 
and #3 at the bottom of the cylinder and both are 3.010". I have not pulled 
the pan yet. Any thoughts on the floppy pistons and the gap I can see?

  Better try with the telescoping gauges again.  New specs for a 
standard bore is 3.0122 to 3.0130 depending on the piston group. 
The pistons can be 3.0110, 114, 118.
  Wasn't this engine supposed to be fairly freshly rebuilt?  Obviously 
wasn't bored and from your description of the cylinder walls it doesn't 
sound like it was even honed properly if at all.  The wobble of the 
pistons can appear greater than it really measures so it's hard to 
say from just that.
  The sticky and all that is beyond a film of dark gray dust is from the 
oil consumption.  I doubt it trapped all the Bon Ami.  :)
