  For a bit of money one could build a bit less finicky version somewhat 
along the lines of the newer Honda lightweights.  They use a sine wave
inverter and a DC generator.  Speed regulation wouln't be critical to 
Hz, only for load and that wouldn't be critical.  It'd just have to do 
enough.  Then the genset could be even more efficient by running at 
slower speeds when not that much output is required.  It'd require a 
couple/few hundred dollars for a good sine wave inverter but it'd be a 
nice generator!
