My experience with puddle diagnosis came from working with a 1985 Jetta TD.
It collected quarts of water in the passenger foot wells.
AND.....I never could get all the moisture out of the footwells just
soaking it up with towels, etc. I took out the seats and totally stripped
the carpeting/underlay right down to the metal floorboards.
I pitched about 50 pounds of wet sound-deadening material and underlayment
padding.
Then, I dried up the cabin with a hair dryer and let it sit in the sun for
a day.
FINALLY....I got a roll of upholstering felt about an inch thick and about
6 feet long and 3 feet wide. I fitted the felt in place of the original
underlayment, and replaced the now-dry carpeting.
Took about two days. Been dry for about 3 years. Better than being damp
and musty for 3 years.
