The problem on the A1 and early A2s is that the fill plug seems to have
been placed assuming the engine (and tranny) sitting vertical.  With the
angled back engine, the tranny fill hole rotates downwards since it is
to the rear of the case and thus ends up about 7mm too low.  Not much,
height-wise, but enough to make a 1 pint difference in volume.  Later
transaxle cases (sometime in '87) supposedly had the fill hole rasied
the 7mm to be in the correct location.

Supposedly the oil is good for the life of the transaxle.  The place the
rebuilt a few of my transaxles recommends replacing most gear oils
regularly (forget the interval) but Redline MTL and MT-90 were oils that
they listed as not needing routine replacement.
