The 5 speed is just a 4 speed with extended shafts and an extra gear stuck out in a new clutch lever housing.   For whatever reason the trans engineers had a brain fart and failed to anticipate the flow of oil around the little compartment off of the main case, and it was common in early cars to lose 5th gear.  I think it was due to oil pumping over the intended communicating port, and as the trans level went down (usually due to axle flange leaks) it would run the 5th gear compartment nearly dry.

I can't remember if it came through VW or our own back shop, but we always filled and checked the 5 speeds by jacking the driver's front corner (come to think of, far too simple a solution for VW).  Problem solved.
