I find taking out and replacing the speedo gear so much simpler than
groveling on the ground and fighting those pipe plugs (I recently made a
plug wrench out of a wheel bolt and a chunk of flat iron) Havent given it a
special volks tool number yet.
I have not had any trouble getting the speedo gear back in if its clean.
Its much simpler that fiddling with blocks, creepers and pipe plugs. I'm 70
years old, and need a hoist to get me up off the creeper when I roll out
from under.
Further, I now know exactly where 2 liters of oil comes up to, on a
jackshaft gear near the speedo gear.
I can check the oil level visually.
The speedo gear on the jackshaft should always be covered with oil (not
visible)
For the number of times it needs to be done on each car in a lifetime, using
the volume fill method is dead simple.
