[Vwdiesel] NA exhaust valves for a TD head?

Well, I'm thinking if you have sodium valves, they are good and should be
reused. If you don't, you don't reuse them... Only reason for changing out
a real honest to goodness sodium filled valve was if it was screwed. They
have such a long life, that it has to be buggered before you change it, like
bent or eroded. That was the reason for the sodium filling in the first
place- to negate the effects of heat on them and conduct the bad heat away
down the stem where it can be dissipated. I'd bet the valves are fine if
they are true sodium filled valves. The guides are what wear not the
valve... much. That said, always replace ordinary exhaust valves, do not
reuse. ever.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] NA exhaust valves for a TD head?

In speaking with Peter at Bowwow (the local VW parts place), I was told
they have supplied standard NA valves for TD applications for years with
no problems. These are about $12 vs $40 for the proper sodium filled TD
exhaust valves.
I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on using standard valves for a TD
application (hydraulic). I was thinking I could replace all the guides, then
measure the valves. If they are in spec, leave them alone. If one or more is
out of spec, I should probably replace all of them with NA valves, rather
than have a mismatch. Or spend way more money can get the TD valves...
