[Vwdiesel] Frost plugs - how to install?

I got some 14mm plugs for the oil galleries, and still need to get some of 
the big ones (36.6mm). I pounded the small ones in with a deep socket 
that fit just inside the plug, then wondered if I'd done it right... It seems fine, 
but should I have put anything on to seal it? Any special tricks to this? They 
are the convex, so there is no bump to pop in, as I've heard described on 
some plugs...
