The shop that
rebuilt it specifically waited until he had the new .020 over pistons before
he did the bore and hone on the block. He said that he had to match the new
pistons to the block. So that tells me he has some idea on how to rebuild
this engine and not just bore and hone it to book spec's and expect the new
pistons to fit. Since he was so thorough I'm really curious as to what is
wrong with the rings.
Standard procedure does not mean thourough or knowlegable on a
particular engine. I've NEVER had a shop willing to bore an engine
without piston in hand FIRST. Regardless of the fuel it burns. Most
don't even check over the batch for consistency but some do and
then decide on the bore dia.
Blowby is coming past the rings or in a smaller degree past worn
valve stems or guides. If your engine was honed too finely then it's
likely to wear the rings quickly and have blowby before they have a
chance to seat well even. The tendancy anymore is to hone to a
fine finish instead of coarse and that just doesn't seem to work on
these engines.
