Well I was able to get to the Jetta today. Turns out the cam sprocket did
slip and the timing was off a good bit, surprised it ran. Well I was able to
get the head off as well. The head and valves look fine, but the pistons
have some marks, well 1,3, and 4 have what looks like normal soot marks on
the pistons, can't feel any indentation but then I didn't clean off the
soot, #2 piston has a nice indentation in it from where the exhaust valve
was hitting it. How much damage can these pistons have and still be
serviceable? I'm pulling them out anyway so to change them isn't too bad
but don't want to spend anymore than I have too. You can see the hone marks
in the cylinders, but then it only has 5k miles on it. I still need to pull
the oil pan and take the rod caps off and push the pistons up. I don't
understand why the cam sprocket moved. I checked the torque on the sprocket
bolt and it wasn't very tight and I know I torqued it to the specs in the
Bentley when I put it all back together the first time.. It didn't have
anything on it either, it was all clean and a dry fit between the cam and
the sprocket. I'll make sure it gets torqued tighter next time. I can take
pictures if anyone is interested, just no way of posting them to a site.

Nick
