  Actually you correct the diminishing clearance by adjusting the valves 
with thinner shims.

  Yes, if the clearances are less then the duration is extended.  Only when 
valve lash is zero or less will the valve not close, except for bounce, etc.
This is remedied by reestablishing the proper clearance, not advancing or 
retarding the valve timing.  If the lobe circle has no clearance, advancing 
or retarding fixes nothing. 
  Not that there may not be some merrit in miniscule advance or retarding 
of the valve timing but how much, which direction, is it worth the risk of 
bending valves... are all valid questions.  I've leaned toward the last one.

  Cold settings are ONLY for assembly.  All valve adjustment are supposed 
to be done on a hot/warm engine.  Many engines DO permit or specify 
clearances when cold.  I believe the engine runs in a warm state and that 
is the best state to set the valve clearances.  :-)
