This is for those who can not wait for the FINAL draft.
First a few comments. ---- This procedure was intended to be used after everything was
done according to the book. And she still smokes ---and lacks power.
NEVER turn a VW diesel in a Rabbit out of a Rabbit if it is an unknown.USING THE STARTER.
Turn it with a wrench. I had a PO that locked right up with the valves hitting the pistons.
IF so just slip belt off and turn using two wrenches. Remember cam rotates at half
crankspeed.
Remove top cover from Timing belt. ---- Remove VC --------Remove injector #1 ----
Remove big screw-in plastic from transmission. Remove timing belt up top.
Slack off tightener.(first).
Turn cam so both valves # 1 cyl are closed. --then lock cam in place.I use a piece of
aluminium angle held in place by a nut and stud ---VC stud.
Then use wrench to turn crank to # 1 piston is TDC.---be accurate.I use a flat
oil or tranney dipstick. Then look at timing mark on flywheel. it should be at TDC.
sometimes marked with a circle and a line throught it.. If NO mark is showing turn the crank a few times and see
what shows. ----NO mark ? make one. Paint at least an inch wide mark so it is easy to
find next time. I use white nailpolish. Cover Girl wow ----ridgefilling basecoat.. Paint a 1 inch
strip where pump meets bracket ---That is the place we scribe a line later with
a needle.
Line up all marks and lock pump sprocket. ---be super clean and accurate.
Slip the belt back on and tighten No need to loosen cam sprocket. can be done later.
Reinstall Injector --remove locks ---- turn engine over say ten revolutions by hand.
All ok ? reinstall VC. Scribe line on pump and bracket --90 degrees and accurate.
Then remove OUTLET banjo and fill pump with fresh diesel ---use a coffee filter.
Fill right to the brimm.
Then srew fueling screw all the way in and back it out 3 turns ---this is just a starting point.
Adjust fuel so she just runs ---not driveable. Jacking back and forth idle screw and fueling screw takes a bit of practice. You can not go too lean to start with. Just get her running. This is a precausionary
procedure just in case you have a stuck open injector.Lot of fuel in a cylinder
may create high cylinder pressure. Bunnies do not like that. If it sounds like a
rod bearing --it is most likely ---a stuck open injector. Fuel Knock.
Hagar.
PS : that should get you started "thinking" ---do not worry this has proven itself
time and again. After this comes the "Fine TUNING". Scott Kair am I right
so far ? . I am senile so I may forget things.
