Ok, just got off the phone with the shop. They offered to dissassemble
head & remove the paint. I said to please do so. (I will not pay for
this).
Here's what he said about the rest: they've done dozens of VW
diesels, and they all come out with a small amount of scoring from
material coming off the precups, even though they do it wet. He said a
mirror smooth finish would require their diamond cutter, and the
precups will destroy the cutter (is this true? I though diamond was
pretty hard...). He assured me they have not had any problems with
VW diesels heads done like this.
He also said the cracked precup was not a problem, and that
replacing & machining one to fit would be 1.5 hours. He says they
often are cracked, and do not cause a problem.
I will try to pick it up later today and take some pics.
On the plus side, the welding job they did on the coolant cavity
appears excellent - I had a hard time even spotting it.
