I spendt a LOT of time here explaining to beginners what exactly ?
is Power Factor ?
It is tricky because it is expressed in a number of different ways. BUT for the Hams ?
I have no problem.
Here is Hagars version ---it is the Phase shift between peak current and peak voltage..
Yes the peak is not important. ----it works all the way ---to the bank.
I sat down for lunch with a lot of Generation Wizards----- no shit . And when they
talk ? they mention powerfactor as being UNITY: ---or LEADING ----or LAGGING.
So we wound up with a lot of vector diagrams on the napkins. --- Yes the factor is in degrees and so on.
BUT for the smart ones ? it is the cosine of Phi -------if you fell a sleep during
TRIG ? ---tuff luck.
For those of you who fell a sleep ? -----here it is without the TRIG.
If you have a dual beam scope ---put Voltage and Current on and you will see that
an inductive load delays the current by a lot. If you put on a capacitor load ? you
will se the current peaking way before the voltage ----in a perfect case it will be 90 degrees.
By the way if you see 90 degrees I like to know about it.
Likewise in a perfect inductive case it it will peak way behind ---like 90 degrees.
So what is so important about that ? a LOT. It winds up as a lot of current when there is little voltage --RIGHT ?.
Called Wattless current ----lots of amps but little power. ---are u --catching on ?
What does that current do ? it heats the wires and screws up motorwindings and generator windings.
Hydro puts a penalty on ---because they use Wattmeters so measure your useage.
So they do not get every drop of blood out of you ----if you have a lot of Wattless current.
Are you catching on ?
It is FUN -------when you get the melody.
Hagar.
PS : have fun ---Hagar your Genset guy. (for FREE) sure hope you appreciate all
that experience. ?
