This bugs the hydro co. because your meter shows less watts used than you
actually used, and they have to generate more power than they can charge you
for to supply your load..
Sandy

Sandy Cameron I hagar got to cut in on this one ---------- to explain to the NEWBIES
that we are talking about different types of Hydro Meters. A NORMAL haus meter in this area is
a simple aluminium disk coupled to a counter . And it measures WATTS. --only.

It does not care what the powerfactor is. ----------My penalty on the compressor was on
a very complicated Industrial meter.

Sandy and all I understand that the meter measures ALL the wattage used ok ----BUT
in a cse of severe case of low powerfactor ---they the Hydro pays for the loss in the lines
for which they do not get paid. ------- losses on our side of the meter ---we pay for.
It makes sense to correct . The loss is fairly small in most cases.

Is it possible to measure Power Factor ? ----on a Genset standby unit ? yes indeed.

The enemy is called KVAR. ---or Vars if you like. Volt-Amps-Reactive. Multiply
with Cosine of Phi and you get watts. Cos Phi ? yes it is on the nameplate of
most motors and generators.(Alternators). Are your palms getting sweaty ? so
are mine.----my senility is showing.

Relax ---in a NORMAL household ? ---DO not worry about power factor.

This talk is for us Genset nuts. -----

Hagar.
