When our house was broken into several years ago, I wound up
taking several days & half-days off work to follow the proceedings.
The assistant prosecutor encouraged my attendance, and I got to submit
an inventory of items stolen and damaged, as well as a victim impact
statement. All of this was factored into the restitution part of the
sentence, of which I have yet to receive a dime.
On the other hand, there is a sense of satisfaction in hearing the
gavel drop and seeing the perpetrator(s) led out in cuffs and leg
irons for an extended period.
At any rate, a process is involved. The case will be assigned to
an overburdened assistant prosecutor who will be your contact. If he
gets the impression that you don't care, they'll be back on the street
before long. Mannerly persistence pays off in the long run. Get the
docket number, which is how cases are tracked. In many jurisdictions
these days, you can track the progress of cases through the clerk of
the court's website. That's a lot easier than spending afternoons on
the phone trying to follow things.
Good luck,
Scott Kair
