[Vwdiesel] transmission bits

Someone on the list was kind enough to make me a pretty good deal on a 5
speed transmission. On opening it, I found some issues that wouldn't
have been obvious in running it.
1) The syncro hubs are worn. I can get the rings at a pretty good price
locally, but the hubs are a different story. Kate says that they are
only available as part of a set that includes the selector ring or
whatever you call the think the selector fork rides in. Bus Depot has a
price of > $200. Is there a cheaper answer that perhaps involves just
the hubs?
2) In the final drive, the differential gears are worn. (These are the
fours gears two of which are attached to the flanges and two of which
are attached to the final drive disk that allow the wheels to turn at
different speeds around corners.) Bus Depot wants > $600. I'm somewhat
inclined to leave them in place and figure that they don't get used all
that much since I drive straight more often than in circles. The other
option would be to pull them (or perhaps the entire final drive disk)
from my 4 speed, but I'm not sure if they are compatible.
Of course another approach is to look for another 5 speed and hope to
accumulate enough bits to make one really good transmission, but given
the lack of good Rabbit junkyards in my area, that's a bit of an effort.
And if anyone on the lists has the appropriate bits on a shelf in good
shape, I'd be happy to make a deal.
Unfortunately, I don't have the 5 speed at hand, so can't check the
transmission code. Looking at Roger Brown's chart, I remember that it
does have the 0.71 5th (since I was concerned about have a 5th similar
to the 4th in the current trans). I've blanked as to whether the 4
speed is a GL or GY.
Thanks for any help.
Best,
