[Vwdiesel] Temp gauge - mechanical?

I didn't realize until I looked this afternoon that the coolant temp sensors
('91 1.6td) are mounted with clips rather than screw-in type sensors.   For
those here who have put mechanical temp gauges in their cars & have this
type sensor mounting (earlier ones screw in, right?), what's the best way to
install the sensor for the mech. Gauge ?

Btw, did my thermostat temp question come thru?   What's 'correct'?  Surely
someone has an easy answer on that one.
