Depending on your highway speed you may only get low
40's. Mid 40's is about it usually. Bigger exhaust helps
generally but you never know. It might help mileage, power,
temp, two or three of those or none to speak of. My 1.5
made better power and mileage. Dad's 1.6 PU had stump
pulling low end after a 2 1/4" exhaust, a little better cooling but
not much else.
The great thing with a diesel is that most of the time a gain
in power or mileage gives you a gain in the other! :-)
The mods I found to be the most helpful on an NA are
bigger exhaust, mild porting, Total Seal rings, clean air filter,
properly set valves, properly set timing, good injectors and in
roughly that order other than the basic, tune up type stuff.
A turbo does wonders too! ;-)
