That was me!
The canoe in the picture

has been carried on every one of my VWs, including the
Cabriolet, a couple of Rabbits, the Bus, and even my
Corrado.
I bought a kit at Wal-Mart that included four foam
blocks, two straps, and some rope to carry it on the
cars. That worked (and still works) very well. On
the Corrado

one strap goes through the door openings, and the
other goes just under the hinges for the hatch. The
ropes are tied to the tow hooks. On the C, the ropes
would have rubbed on the paint on the bumpers so I
had some rags between the rope and the bumper. I just
ordered a hitch for the Corrado, so soon it'll also be
able to pull the boat!
I might slow down a bit with a canoe on top, but only
like 5-10 MPH at the most. Those straps and the rope
at the front and back really hold it very securely. I
cannot comment on how much it actually affects fuel
mileage, though I would assume it does some.
I have since lost a couple of the foam blocks, so I
bought a "fun noodle" and cut it up to serve the same
purpose. You can see them in the cabby picture (they
are orange).
I'd like to have a Kayak for when I can't find someone
to go canoeing with me.
Have fun!
