I am also a memeber of the passat yahoo group. There
was a lively discussion on there about octane ratings
a week or so ago.
Basically, some folks claimed better mileage with
higher octane--enough to justify the added expense.
They also claimed performance differences felt. An
equal number claimed to get better mileage on lower
octane gas and didn't notice a difference in
performance one way or the other.
We basically came to the concensus that the difference
was probably a combination of driving style, the
engine/trans, and region of the country (different
octanes available in different places). So, we
decided that it wasn't going to hurt anything to try,
and to use your own judgement on whether or not you
are getting value for your high-octane dollar.
I personally only buy the lower octane stuff, except
when I use my "Plus" card at one station that takes 10
cents off midgrade.
