[Vwdiesel] Exhaust leaks

I've recently developed an exhaust leak which I initially thought was the
round seal at the C clamps, upon closer inspection I've found at least two
of the nuts securing the exhaust manifold to the head, finger tight, I
tightened them and still have leaks so I suspect more are loose.
 
My question to this group is, have any of you experienced this and what do
you think is the chance that the leaks have scarffed out metal from the head
or manifold?  I've had this happen from the heat with my Motor Home and had
to mill the surface of the head and am wondering if anyone has experienced
this with a vw diesel.
