[Vwdiesel] Starting Problem

Car: '81 Jetta N/A (German)
   
  Problem: Car sat for a few months... last weekend started the car and ran it for 30-60 min. with no problem (started first shot). This afternoon (after less than a week) the car wouldn't start. In fact after a few seconds 10-15 the car died w/ a sound like a belt was stuck. Figuring it was the battery I charged the battery (for 6 hours). Now the panel liights come on (w/ glowplug) and the headlights even turn on but when the key is turned there is only a click coming from the relay with no other action (no crank at all).
   
  Things to Note: It is a new battery. I checked the terminals, the grounds/wires and banged the starter a few times.
   
  I looked through the archives and found some info on how to locate the problem (jump the starter etc. which I will try tomorrow)...any other avenues to check/test?
